Abstract

The study examined the records management practices from the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Lusaka, Zambia. The study’s objectives were to; identify the records being created by SMEs; the effects of records management on SMEs performance; and the challenges SMEs are facing in records management practices. The study adopted a qualitative methodology, and purposive sampling was used to draw a sample size of 20 business owners. Primary data was collected using semi-structured interviews, and it was thematically analysed. The findings revealed that SMEs generated paper based financial records only, but were kept in the managers’ offices. Further, it was discovered that the management of financial records was in a disorganised manner due to a lack of records management guidelines. Thus, the study recommends that SMEs employ qualified records officers and orient their employees about best records management practices.
